Is art work?

Even hard work, you might say. It is often extraordinary, coupled with talent and diligence, with great dedication and with wild recklessness. Perhaps a work of art is not called ‚artwork' for nothing. It seems that art and work are inseparable. No work. No art.

On the other hand. No. Artists are simply passionate about what they do. They do it anyway. You can't stop them from doing it. Addicted to art. Who works for nothing but their own passion! What makes it work, while others are passionate about model trains, garden gnomes or knitting and call it a hobby?

Today I met Rainer and Layla, two lifedrawing artists, at their pop-up gallery in Cambridge Heath, London. I felt wonderfully reminded of my student days, as Rainer is a former fellow student. We spent hundreds of hours drawing together, people, portraits, animals in the zoo. Now I sat for a portrait myself, 15 minutes of sketching. Pencil, watercolours....

It seemed like child's play for both of them who drew me. I myself was in a moment of tension, sitting still, four eyes watching me closely, the people at the window watching what was going on there...
